Parenting education is provided through individual and/or group services as deemed appropriate. The focus is on understanding developmental stages and appropriate expectations for parent and child relationships. Course material covers the topics of positive discipline, effective communication, and parent/child modeling of behavior.
Goals of the program are:
To provide education and support for parents in need
To promote positive development of parenting techniques for individuals and families
To reduce the risk of child abuse and neglect
Catholic Social Services offers the following parenting programs:
Early Childhood Parenting: This program is designed for parents whose children are newborn through age five. The program help parents gain parenting skills, understand children’s behavior, build self-esteem, improve communication, and foster healthy family relationships.
Intensive Parenting: This program consists of supervised visits with your children and one-on-one parenting instruction with a caseworker.
Parenting Groups: Group education is based on the Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP) model. Held at Catholic Social Services, the groups run in six week cycles. The sessions are supportive, friendly and thought provoking.
Spanish Parenting Programs: Catholic Social Services offers a comprehensive parenting curriculum for parents of Spanish-speaking children.
Each cycle consists of six sessions that meet for approximately ninety minutes each week. The cost is $20.00 per week ($120.00 per series). Individual parenting education is available on a limited basis.
At the conclusion of the course, a Certificate of completion is awarded to individuals who attended each class and completed a comprehensive examination.
